Enterprise Architecture and IT Strategy

Summary

This five-day course equips participants to design, govern and evolve an enterprise architecture that keeps IT investment tied to business strategy. It uses the TOGAF® Standard, 10th Edition — the world's most widely adopted enterprise architecture framework — as its method, and frames every topic around one question: how should an organisation decide, steer and control its technology choices?

Participants work through the TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM) from establishing an architecture capability to governing implementation and managing change. Days 1–2 build the foundations; days 3–4 apply them to a realistic case study; day 5 consolidates IT governance practice and closes with a full mock exam.

The course prepares participants for The Open Group's combined Part 1 and Part 2 examination, leading to the TOGAF® Enterprise Architecture Practitioner certification.

Who should attend?

CIOs, CTOs, ICT directors and heads of digital transformation

Summary

Why attend?

  • Translate strategy into a target architecture and a sequenced roadmap that executives can fund and track.

  • Set up architecture governance — an Architecture Board, compliance reviews and architecture contracts — that stops costly, fragmented technology decisions.

  • Speak a common language with architects, auditors, project managers and business leaders.

  • Apply the method to African public- and private-sector realities: digital government platforms, shared services, legacy modernisation, cloud and data sovereignty.

  • Prepare for a globally recognised enterprise architecture certification.

Who should attend?

  • CIOs, CTOs, ICT directors and heads of digital transformation

  • Enterprise, solution, business, data and security architects

  • IT governance, risk and compliance professionals, and IT auditors

  • Programme and project managers delivering cross-cutting ICT initiatives

  • Business analysts and strategy or planning officers working with IT

  • Public-sector officers responsible for e-government platforms, ICT standards or shared services

Prerequisites

No formal prerequisite. At least two years’ experience in IT, business analysis or project delivery is recommended. Participants receive pre-course reading one week before the start date.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the role of enterprise architecture in IT governance, and how it complements frameworks such as COBIT, ITIL and ISO/IEC 38500.

  2. Describe the structure of the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition, including the Fundamental Content and Series Guides.

  3. Establish an architecture capability: principles, organisation model, tailored method and Architecture Repository.

  4. Apply each phase of the ADM, from Preliminary and Architecture Vision through Business, Information Systems and Technology Architectures to Migration Planning.

  5. Run architecture governance through an Architecture Board, compliance reviews, architecture contracts and dispensations.

  6. Use core techniques: stakeholder management, business scenarios, gap analysis, capability-based planning and risk management.

  7. Integrate security, risk and agile delivery into the architecture lifecycle.

  8. Build a sequenced Architecture Roadmap and Implementation and Migration Plan that can be funded and tracked.

  9. Prepare to sit The Open Group’s TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Foundation and Practitioner examinations.

Course agenda

Day 1: Enterprise architecture, IT governance and the TOGAF Standard

  • Enterprise architecture as a governance discipline: aligning IT with strategy, value and risk

  • Where EA sits alongside COBIT, ITIL, ISO/IEC 38500 and ISO/IEC 27001

  • Structure of the TOGAF Standard, 10th Edition: Fundamental Content and Series Guides

  • Core concepts: architecture domains, building blocks, deliverables, artifacts

  • Overview of the Architecture Development Method (ADM)

Day 2: Architecture capability, content and governance foundations

  • Preliminary Phase: architecture principles, scope and the tailored framework

  • Architecture Content Framework and Content Metamodel

  • Enterprise Continuum and the Architecture Repository

  • Architecture governance: Architecture Board, compliance reviews, architecture contracts

  • Foundation exam revision and practice test

Day 3: Developing the architecture (case study)

  • Phase A — Architecture Vision: stakeholders, business scenarios, statement of architecture work

  • Phase B — Business Architecture: capabilities, value streams, organisation mapping

  • Phase C — Information Systems Architectures: data and application

  • Phase D — Technology Architecture, including cloud and open source platform choices

  • Gap analysis and building-block identification

Day 4: From architecture to delivery and change (case study)

  • Phase E — Opportunities and Solutions: work packages and transition architectures

  • Phase F — Migration Planning: capability-based planning, business value, roadmap sequencing

  • Phase G — Implementation Governance: architecture contracts and compliance in delivery

  • Phase H — Architecture Change Management, and Requirements Management

  • Integrating security, risk and agile delivery with the ADM

  • Practitioner exam revision and scenario practice

Day 5: Governing IT through architecture; exam preparation

  • Building an EA practice: maturity, KPIs and value reporting to the board

  • Workshop: a governance charter and Architecture Board terms of reference for participants’ own organisations

  • Full timed mock exam (Part 1 and Part 2 format), review and an individual exam-readiness plan

Educational approach

The course balances theory and practice, with roughly half the time spent on applied work:

  • Lectures illustrated with real enterprise and government architecture examples

  • A running case study that takes one organisation through the full ADM cycle

  • Group exercises producing real deliverables: principles, a stakeholder map, gap analysis and a roadmap

  • Practice questions and mock exams in the format of the certification exam

  • Facilitation by LCG consultants with hands-on IT governance and architecture experience

Examination and certification

This course prepares participants for The Open Group’s combined Part 1 and Part 2 examination. Passing both parts leads to the TOGAF® Enterprise Architecture Practitioner certification; passing Part 1 alone leads to TOGAF® Enterprise Architecture Foundation.
