Ensuring the security of your information with automated disk-based online backup

Backup of vital company information is critical to a company's survival, no matter the size of the company. Studies have shown that over 90% of companies that lose data due to a disaster go out of business within two years. Increasingly, companies are turning to automated, disk-based server backup as opposed to tape-based, manual backups. This can be implemented in any one of four ways:

  1. Peer to peer backups – This solution allows your company to have a complete backup plan without the added cost of new hardware. The system is installed in the preexisting computers in a local area network (LAN), with computers backing up data in the free hard disk space of each other. This is ideal in small and home offices where budget is a big constraint.
  2. LAN server backup – In this scenario, a backup server is installed in a small to medium size office and all other computers backup in this server. The server has one or two hard disks of high capacity and these are used to store the compressed and encrypted backups of the the rest of the computers.
  3. Remote, branch office backup – This is a likely scenario where a medium size to a large organization has branch offices which are Geographically separate. The backup system is implemented in such a way that each branch runs a backup in a peering branch. One or two branches can be used to house the backup servers for redundancy.
  4. Online backup - This is the most versatile backup strategy. The client data is stored in an off site data center run and operated by the solution provider. The data is compressed, encrypted, and transported over the Internet (or a point-to-point connection) to the off site facility. While in storage, the data is still encrypted which means that its only the data owner who can have access to it. This creates a very high level of data redundancy because it can be recovered from any location in case of a disaster in the client premises, or a data loss event like a virus attack.

In all these cases, the keyword is automation. The biggest obstacle to a successful backup solution is human error where backups are done manually with tapes or other media. Our solution is based on an automated system. Once installed, the system is scheduled and all the subsequent backups happen automatically on the set schedules. This can be monthly, weekly, daily, hourly or continuous backups. It all depends on the organization and its Recovery Time Objective (RTO).

Our online backup servers are located in data center run by the leading national data operator in Kenya. The servers run on the secure Linux Operating system which are impossible to break into. This means that your data will be secure for the entire time that it is stored with us.
